Day 3 Berlin tour

July 8, 2009. Our group of Hawaiians were too big for one bus, so we had two. The other bus got a really cool tour guide... we got Mrs. Yu.

Mrs. Yu, she was hilarious. She introduced herself with her limited English then said if you have any complaints please tell me, not my boss or I will get fired.

The river SPREE.

The Potsdamer Platz: this place was the blitziest place in the 1920's.

The Unter den Linden (under the Linden). After Hitler, the once beautiful street filled with old Linden trees were gone. All the trees you see are less than 50 years old. According to Ms. Yu, there are no trees or forests in Berlin older than 50 yrs because after WWII, the people used all the wood to keep warm and to cook with.

The East side gallery of the Berlin Wall

Check point Charlie was the wall's crossing point for the east and west which many were able to escape during the Cold War.

Cars now drive over the line where the wall once stood.

What the wall really looks like today.

Brandenburger Tor or gate. A sign of peace but has hardly seen any peace throughout its history. It survived Napoleon's attacks, two World Wars, Hitler and his Nazi Party and the Communist East who built the wall that blocked it turning it into a dead end.
Recently Germany has stopped all motor vehicles from driving through, it is now foot traffic only.
